Sarah McQuaid is an internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist whose life and music span several cultures. Born in Spain, raised in Chicago, a longtime resident of Ireland and now based in rural Cornwall, England, she brings that varied background into music that blends folk, Americana, blues and atmospheric contemporary songwriting. Her rich, velvety voice and accomplished playing on acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards and percussion have earned praise for both their technical skill and emotional depth.
Since releasing her first solo album, When Two Lovers Meet, in 1997, McQuaid has developed a distinctive body of work ranging from traditional songs and intimate ballads to experimental arrangements and instrumental pieces. She is also widely respected in the acoustic guitar world as the author of The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book. In 2017, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ards International Guitar Festival in recognition of her musicianship and contribution to guitar music.
McQuaid’s live performances are especially known for their warmth, humor and intimacy. Critics have praised her “brilliant musicianship” and “captivating, unorthodox songwriting,” while audiences often describe her concerts as deeply personal and immersive. Whether performing a thoughtful ballad, playful blues number or atmospheric instrumental, McQuaid has a gift for drawing listeners into the story and creating a powerful sense of connection between performer and audience.
WHAT CRITICS ARE SAYING
“A major statement in contemporary folk.” — The Vinyl District
“Spine-chilling ... The songs are exceptional: some of the lyrics here would look equally at home in a volume of poetry, though it would be a pity to deprive them of Sarah’s voice and melodic flair.” — Folking.com
“Seeing a shared world in a new way, from a different angle, is the role of the songwriter. Sarah gets a gold star on that front. This is a fabulous album.” — The Afterword
